Desperate measures!
Mark was fishing Ghriama on a bright clear day and having little success so tried an Orange Fritz on a sink tip line to try and bring them up. A beautiful 10lb 2oz Brownie was the result - returned alive and kicking. Sept 2015

Lives to fight another day.
Liam and Pete had a good day catching fish all over Ghriama, despite the weather, and this 8lbs 4oz Brownie came to a home tied "palmer". Released to give us all a chance for next time! Sept 2015

Pascal's Poisson
Pascal and Audrey traveled to Overscaig hoping the weather would be kind enough to allow them to fish - this is a picture of just one of 40 "truite" caught on Merkland! Aug 2015

Second best!
How about a 6lb 2oz wild brown trout on a size 12 Mallard & Claret. Bernie is no stranger to good fish on these lochs and if look through the pics below you will find some of the best. It didn't win the cup though! June 2015

Pete takes the Crown
The new winner of "Welsh Week" is Pete with this superb (although not as pretty as Bernie's) Brown Trout weighing 8lb 12oz. Taken on the surface and very close to the shore on an Olive pattern near the top end of Loch Merkland. June 2015

Teamwork
Dave caught this lovely 2lb brownie on Ghriama with a Kate McLaren. Dave and Allan had a stunning week averaging over 24 fish each per day. All the conditions were perfect and the fish obliged and were put back alive. June 2014

Allan shows the way - again!
For "Welsh Week", Allan brings in the best fish of the week - a beautiful 3lb 8oz Brown Trout from Loch merkland, taken on a specially tied Shin Olive. Can you make 3 in a row next year? June 2014

Corbett Crew get shown how it's done!
Malcolm was the novice in the crew this day but it is clear his teachers did a good job. He caught this 12lb 4oz monster on Ghriama with a "Corbett Special" and it took about 1 hour to get it in the net. Sept. 2013

Peter's prefect
This lovely 2lb 8oz brown trout was taken late in September from Merkland. The detail is unimportant, but the flies making the difference this day were blue & brown. Peter's experience proved the day but the following day beginner's luck had it all. Sept 2013

As good as it gets!!!
Simon gave his friends Sebastian & Daniel quite a meal this evening following a stormy day on the bank of Loch Shin. This beauty weighed in at 16lb 2oz and was caught on a brass coloured spinner. Trout will be on their menu for quite some time. September 2012

A Humungus catch
Rob is not a newcomer to these pages or to fly fishing Loch Shin. If you look through the photos below you'll find another beauty caught last year. Here he has a nice 3lb 8oz brownie caught up at the mouth of the Corrie burn on a mini-humungus. June 2012

Fantastic Fran finds a fish.
In July, a group of fishermen, mostly from Co. Kildare in Eire, came to the hotel and explored the local lochs. Fran enjoyed his visit in his own way but especially the trout on Loch a'Ghriama. July 2012

Cracker dap!
Rob took this lovely 5lb plus brownie on the dap, up at the top end of Shin. Mike (taking the photo) and Rob had a couple of good days with Ghillie Charlie on Craggie and Shin. July 2012

Blues Brother on Shin!
It wasn't the sun that forced Ken to put on the sunglasses - it was the shine off the trout! Great photo - thanks Ken (and the photographer). June 2012

Kenny's muddler monster!
Kenny takes pride of place amongst his friends as he shows off the 6lb beauty taken on his own muddler pattern, near the top end of Loch Shin. It was a good day's fishing with nearly 60 fish caught and returned, averaging just under 1lb. The 2nd heaviest fish weighed 2lbs. June 2012

A Grand Day Out
Everyone enjoyed this day out on Loch Shin with Alan the the captain of the catch - a beautiful 8lb 3oz Brown Trout taken on a Rapalla from the far bank. May 2012

Calum's Return
Calum has seen a few double figure brownies over the years but hasn't fished at Overscaig for quite a while. He and Willie celebrated their return with this beauty (10lb 7oz) which took a Rapalla on the far shore. May 2012

Martin takes the day.
Mark and Martin had a suntan by the time the came back in this day - but it was worth it. This fish at 9lb 4oz was the best of the day with Mark's fish below being next. Mark & Martin put all these big fish back - so there still there waiting for the next boat to come along! May 2012

Gorgeous George & Mighty Mark
George & Mark hold up their prize catches for the day. George's beauty is 5lb 13oz and Mark's is 3lbs 13oz both caught on a trolled Rapalla. May 2012

Not just a wierd fish!
Jim, Steve and John have enjoyed a good day on Shin. Not only did the 2 boats catch about 40 trout averaging 1lb 8oz they also caught these two superb fish. May 2012

Jim's fixed it again!
Jim takes a regular cruise on Loch Shin in May each year and it never disappoints. This lovely 6lb 8oz brown trout was caught on the troll near the Hydro Station using a silver Rapalla. May 2012

Clan Chief does it again.
Robert may not be the head of the clan but his choice of flies made the difference. This 4lb brownie was caught on a Clan Chief but the bigger one that got away took the Kate McLaren with it. September 2011

King of the fish!
June and Derek had a fantastic time trolling the Shin, not only catching a lovely 4 1/2lb brown trout but also a beautiful 6lb salmon. Aug 2011

Michael's a winner!
George and Colin stand beside Michael and his catch of the day - a couple of superb brownies, best 2 1/2lbs. They were caught on the troll on the far shore between the Hydro and the toop of the loch. August 2011

Caught down under!
Rob and Barry had a great day on Shin. Two beautiful brownies - one 3 3/4 lbs plus one 2 1/2 lbs and a bag of fish that weighed over 11 lbs. A good memory to take back to Oz - safe journey Barry. July 2011

When you're smiling ....
Everyone was smiling when this fish was landed. Day 2 of Allan's latest excursion on Loch Shin brought this beauty to the boat - 11lbs 5oz plus his little mate - 6lbs 8oz. Yesterday's fish had been feeding on salmon smolts so the lures have worked best. May 2011

Triple
Alec and Arthur are happy to stand by Allan and his two fantastic Brown Trout. Caught on the troll, the biggest (8lb 6oz) was caught with a fly and the smaller (5lb 8oz) on a Rapalla. Shin fishing at its best. May 2011

Fish for a King
Paul and Ahmed had their first day trolling at the top end of Shin this year. They caught and returned this 7lb Salmon Kelt at the top of the loch (on a copper Toby). May 2011

John Bryce is no stranger to this gallery or Loch Shin but the hat is NOT England colours (honest). This fantastic fish was taken on the troll near the top of the loch - a lovely looking 7lbs exactly. May 2011

Three in a row
Stuart, John & Jim show off the best of their catch. A superb selection of well fed Brownies all caught at the top of Loch Shin on Rapallas. Best fish 5lbs. May 2011

Ready for the fishmonger!
Steve Airey and his colleagues have a regular day or two trolling on Loch Shin. This year Steve's bag looked a bit bigger than usual. Caught at the top end on both sides of the loch, 20-30 feet from the bank. Best fish 4lb 4oz. May 2011

Our chef Dmitrij spent his first day trolling on Loch Shin and caught this superb 7lb 14oz ferox. Needless to say that it tasted superb! Now you'll just have to catch one everyday Dmitrij. May 2011

A Fine Fish for Fiag Bay
Roddy spent a fine day on Loch Shin and trolled this lovely fish in Fiag Bay on a minnow lure. Roddy's once-a-year visit to Shin has definetly been worth it! September 2010

Charlie
Charlie & Geordie hold up 5lb and 3lb 4oz brownies caught on Claret Bumble & Black Pennel near the hotel. The Lairg Angling Club away day brought them together at Overscaig and won Charlie best fish. September 2010

Cod piece!
Not actually a cod but a lovely 3lb 4oz Brown Trout taken close to the shore, south of the river that runs in from Ghriama. The weather was bright but a good day was had by all. Bill, David & Ritchie - September 2010.

We are the champions!
Andrew and Chuck look as if they've won the competition with this lovely 3lb Brown Trout. Andrew hooked it with a Loch Ordy at the top of Loch Shin near the bay where the river comes in from Ghriama. July 2010

Get Smart!
This lovely 6lb 9oz Brownie definitely did. David Smart and friend Adam Beatty had an excellent day on Loch Shin. This fish was caught near Corriekinloch using an ABU Droppen. June 2010

Twins!
John and James had a great day on Shin - they picked up a couple of twins! John's brownie was 4 1/2lbs but James' fish topped the scales at 5lbs. Both were caught on the troll at the very top of the loch. May 2010

Merkland's Best!
Dr George Matheson landed this 6lb 5oz Brown Trout using a Bibio Mini-Muddler in just 2 feet of water near the river flowing in to Loch Merkland at the Narrows. September 2009

Mine's bigger than yours!
Ian and Jeremy have had a great day on Shin. Just after a torrential downpour, at the mouth of the Ghriama river, this 6lb 8oz beauty was caught. It never rains but it pours. June 2009

Bernie Bags Best Big Brownie!
Bernie has been fishing at The Overscaig each year for about 12 years and caught this 5lb 9oz wild Brown Trout on Loch Shin with a Kate McLaren fly and took about 15 minutes to land it - between the Cottage Bay and the Hydro Station. Nice one Bernie. June 2009.

Clynelish winner shows how its done!
Ian Hutcheon the 2007 Clynelish winner took this 3lb 5oz beauty from Loch Merkland in June 2008. Ian and friend Davy Drever enjoyed their prize fishing break at Overscaig with a decent catch on Merkland and Shin and a few drams to celebrate!

Merkland Minnow!
Jo Amos caught this 4 1/2lb beauty from the bank on Loch Merkland - near the narrows. It took an anxious 15 minutes to land. Later that evening Jo saw an even bigger fish moving on the surface - what a night it could have been!! June 2008

Main man!
Bruce, Mark, Duncan, Graeme and Barry after a good May day on Loch Shin. Duncan's 7lb 8oz wild Brown trout was caught on a trolled lure and caught about 1 mile south of The Overscaig on the Salachey shore of Loch Shin. May 2008

The Loch Shin Monster!
Jim MacIntyre, his family and friends have been fishing the Shin for years. Staying in Shinness and using their own boats; they know the loch well and fish all the best spots - this huge 16lb 5 1/2oz ferox Brownie was weighed in at the hotel having been caught on a trolled minnow about 1 mile south of The Overscaig - July 2007.

This fantastic 6lb 10oz brownie was caught on a Sooty Olive just 100 yds south of the hotel. Could be the 2007 season's best!

Willie has "Quality not quantity"!
Willie caught this nice 2lb sea trout on Loch More (Sept. 2006). Loch More and Loch Stack are famous for sea trout and salmon and are only 20-30 minutes by car from the Overscaig.

Bill's Best Brownie
Bill has fished the Shin from Overscaig for many years but 2006 will be remebered for a long time - an 8 3/4lb Brown Trout caught on a size 14 Kate McLaren. It took an hour to get the fish in to the boat!

Wild Brown Trout
The fishing is best "after the snow is off the hills" - which can mean after mid-April or occasionaly mid-June. The average catch is 10 fish weighing 3/4lbs each with a regular supply of fish between 1 and 2 lbs.

This 5 1/2lb Brown Trout was caught on a size 16 spider on Loch Merkland - 10th September 2005.

Rick's catch of the day
Fishing on Loch Shin can occasionally be hard work and difficult - especially at the beginning of the season. This photo was taken in early May 2005.
